Music Makers
The Wybourn Group launches at the brand new Children's Centre, Manor Oaks Road, Tuesday afternoons 1.30 - 2.45pm. The Woodthrope group continues on Wednesday afternoons 1.30 - 3.00pm at Woodthorpe Childrens Centre, Lewis Road.
Originally the group was set up to focus on language development over a ten week period. This continues today but on a more informal basis as the sessions are now on a drop-in basis.
The sessions are a great way to help children with their overall developmeent skills and to help parents to interact with them on a slightly different level to their home environment by using the instruments and singing.
Music Makers is one of our long running groups at the Woodthrope & Wybourn Children's Centre. It was run originally by a speech and language therapist and the early years workers. the idea was to invite people who had shown an interest when visited by our outreach workers and they would then attend a ten week block. The sessions would include singing hello to each chiled, some movement play with a parachute or lycra, then a craft activity making a different instrument each week out of junk, snack time and singing time.
The Sessions ran like this for 2 years with varying numbers of people attending. In 2007 the therapists were no longer involved in the groups. It was dicided to change the group slightly by altering the session to a "drop-in" so that people didn't feel they had to commit. We introduced a soft play session for the first half an hour to give children the chance to crawl, climb and roll and introduced real instruments into the sessions which are now designed to help language development by offering choices and using music and rhyme. Parents are encouraged to join in with their children.
