Community Health Champions

Community Health Champions are volunteers whose role is to support people to eat healthily, be physically active and improve their mental well-being, and so help to improve the health of people in Sheffield’s least healthy communities. It is a new project, supported by several voluntary and community organisations, Sheffield City Council and the local NHS.

Did you know that

The Change 4 Life campaign tells us that unless we act now, 9 out of 10 children will be seriously overweight in a few years’ time, with serious health problems likely to result
  • On average, you will die 12 years earlier if you live in the least healthy neighbourhoods of Sheffield, than people in the healthiest neighbourhoods.

This is why the Health Champions are so important!

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic and willing to learn, and able to commit to volunteering for 16 hours a month for at least 6 months, as well as doing some training. You will need to live in one of the “enhanced public health programme” areas of the city – we can tell you where these are.
You don’t have to know a lot about health, but you will need to be good at listening to people and interested in helping them to solve their problem

What kind of work would a health champion do?

You will plan this with your key worker, but examples might be;
Helping people to live healthier lives by:
  • Promoting health messages to the people, groups and organisations they are involved with
  • Supporting people from their communities in making health choices
  • Organising activities that provide people with the skills and knowledge to live healthier lives
  • Providing peer support to people to help them make and maintain healthy choices

Helping to make their community a healthier place by:
  • Helping to find out about the health challenges their community faces
  • Finding out about health services that are available. Being able to signpost and support others to access those services

What will Health Champions gain from volunteering for the programme?

  • Useful skills, knowledge and experience
  • Free training, including qualifications
  • At least 6 months’ work experience with a reference at the end
  • Working as part of a team
  • Opportunities to share ideas with others
  • A voice in planning future health work in Sheffield, through the Network of Health Champions
  • The chance to make a difference to the health of people in your local community.
